Exploring the Martins Bay Track

The Martins Bay Track offers a short but rewarding coastal walk that connects the rural charm and beauty of Scandrett Regional Park with the laid-back charm of Martins Bay. Located northeast of Warkworth on the Mahurangi Peninsula, Matakana Coast, and just over an hour’s drive from Auckland, this route provides stunning views, stunning pōhutukawa trees, and access to one of the area’s most inviting beaches.

Starting at Scandrett Regional Park

Begin your walk from the upper car park at Scandrett Regional Park, where you’ll be greeted by sweeping views over Kawau Bay, Scandrett Bay, and Mullet Point. From here, head east toward the small historic farm shed, a remnant of the area’s early European settlement. Just beyond the shed lies the entrance to the Martins Bay Track.

The Track to Martins Bay

This short walk takes 10 minutes and descends gently at first through regenerating coastal forest, before becoming steeper near the end. Along the way, you'll pass under the shade of mature pōhutukawa trees, a highlight in summer when they bloom with vibrant red flowers. About halfway down, a grassed reserve offers an excellent lookout point, perfect for a photo stop, framed by exotic pines and panoramic views over Martins Bay.

At the bottom, the track opens up at the northern end of Martins Bay, where a white sand beach and calm waters await. It’s a safe swimming spot and a great option for a relaxing picnic or a refreshing dip. While Martins Bay itself is popular for camping and holidaymakers, this access route from Scandrett offers a quieter, scenic approach.

Return or Extend Your Walk

The return is via the same path, but if you’re up for a longer explore, Scandrett Regional Park has more to offer. From the upper car park, you can connect to the Kawau Bay, Mullet Point, and Orchard Tracks, which loop through farmland, bush, and coastal headlands.

How to get there

From Warworth, take Sandspit Road east, which becomes Mahurangi Road, then Martins Bay Road as it heads along the Mahurangi Peninsula. Turn onto Scandrett Road from Martins Bay Road and park in the upper car park.

Other nearby places on the coast include Sandspit, Brick Bay, Scotts Landing and Snells Beach.
