Exploring Mahurangi Regional Park West
Tungutu Point is a highlight of Mahurangi Regional Park West, located on the west side of the Mahurangi Harbour and part of the Mahurangi Regional Park on the Matakana Coast. As you enter the park, the coastal views from the ridge above Tungutu Point are stunning and amongst the best in northern Auckland, including Otuawao Bay (Mita Bay) and Mahurangi Harbour.
Walking Tracks and Scenic Views
Upon entering the park, you'll find a small parking area on the roadside. From here, an access gate leads into the paddock above Tungutu Point. Follow the ridge track, being mindful of sheep droppings, to enjoy the views. A short marked track also offers a viewpoint at the edge of the point, overlooking Otarawao Bay. There are also several big, attractive pōhutukawa and puriri trees, adding to the scenic charm.
For those interested in a longer walk, the Tungutu Loop Track provides a 1.2 km route. Starting from the car parks at Otarawao Bay, the track begins behind the campground. It traverses a paddock before ascending steeply through native forest regrowth to reach the point. From there, you can continue along the ridge to connect with the Mita Bay Loop Track.
How to Get There
To reach Tungutu Point in Mahurangi Regional Park West, take the Twin Coast Discovery highway between Puhoi and Warkworth, then Mahurangi West Road. Turn off onto Ngarewa Drive to enter the park, where you'll find a small parking area.
There are several other regional parks on the northern Auckland coast, including Wenderholm to the south, Scandrett Regional Park on the Mahurangi Peninsula and Tawharanui to the north.
