Kiwi Esplanade Road

Following the curve of the Manukau Harbour between Ngā Hau Māngere Bridge and Ambury Regional Park, and north of Māngere Mountain, Kiwi Esplanade Road is one of Auckland’s most scenic urban stretches for walkers and cyclists. Lined with pōhutukawa trees, grassy reserves, and glimpses of tidal life, this quiet road hugs the shoreline and forms the backbone of the Māngere coastal pathway. For locals, it’s a favourite place to catch the sea breeze, spot shorebirds, and enjoy nature, all within minutes of home.

Kiwi Esplanade also tells the story of a shifting coastline. What is now a suburban street was once a natural route for waka, with safe landing places along the shore. The harbour supported rich fisheries and shellfish beds, and middens along the foreshore mark sites of long-standing Māori occupation. In recent decades, parts of the coast were reclaimed or built over; however, the area is seeing a return to a more natural state, thanks to efforts by Auckland Council and Watercare.

Along the road, you’ll find multiple small parks and access points to the water. At low tide, wide mudflats emerge, drawing in flocks of wading birds. Royal spoonbill / kōtuku ngutupapa, with their distinctive white plumage and spatulate bills, are increasingly common here. reflecting the improving water quality. Interpretation panels along the way provide information on the estuarine ecosystem and birdlife, and there are a few spots to pause and take in the view across the harbour toward Hillsborough and the Waitākere Ranges.

Kiwi Esplanade Road begins at the southern foot of Ngā Hau Māngere Bridge and runs west along the edge of the suburb of Māngere Bridge and the Manukau Harbour. You can access it by bike, car or on foot from the bridge or Coronation Road. Parking is available along the esplanade, especially near the bridge and Ambury Park entrance. The road is mostly flat and shared by vehicles, but traffic is generally light, making it friendly for bikes and pedestrians.
