Exploring the Scenic Haast Pass-Makarora Road
The Haast Pass-Makarora Road, part of State Highway 6, offers a stunning day trip through New Zealand's South Island. This route follows the western side of Lake Hāwea, crosses the Isthmus, and then traces the edge of Lake Wānaka to Makarora and Haast Pass. The journey is renowned for its breathtaking views of the lakes framed by majestic mountains, with numerous safe spots to stop and take in the scenery.
Waterfalls and Walking Tracks
Along the Haast Pass-Makarora Road, you'll encounter several impressive waterfalls. Notable ones include Fantail Falls and Thunder Creek Falls, while other waterfalls, including the remarkable Wilson Creek, require a bit more effort to discover. The area also offers various walking opportunities, from the easy and popular Blue Pools to more challenging hikes such as the Isthmus Peak Track and Brewster Track. For those interested in camping, sites are available at Boundary Creek and Cameron Flat.
Haast Pass and Surrounding Attractions
At the summit of Haast Pass, you find yourself between the Makarora and Haast River valleys. Continuing a bit further, you'll reach the dramatic Haast Gorge, the Diana Falls and the rapids of the Gates of Haast, offering more spectacular natural beauty.
