Haast River

A Scenic Crossing of the Haast River

Located in South Westland, the Haast River Bridge on State Highway 6 is the longest bridge in the region, stretching 737 metres. As you traverse this one-way bridge, you'll witness the expansive meanderings of the Haast River. Below, the landscape is dominated by gravel flats, with the main river channel flowing on the north side.

Capturing the View

The one-lane bridge has stopping points that allow oncoming cars to pass, which also serve as excellent spots for photography when traffic is light. The Haast River, like the Arawhata River to the south, is known for its striking blue colour. Although the view from the bridge is not particularly high, it still provides a unique perspective of the river's course.

Exploring the Gravel Bed

For those interested in getting closer to the river, you can access the gravel bed via a side road next to the Heartland Hotel. This road is located just before the intersection of Haast Jackson Bay Road and the Haast Highway (SH6).
