Discover the Blue Pools Track
Located on the Makarora River near Haast Pass, within Mt Aspiring National Park, the Blue Pools Track is a very popular short walk that takes you through a beech forest to the strikingly blue pools. These pools are famous for their vibrant blue colour, a striking result of glacial meltwater filtered through rock over thousands of years. While the track can get crowded during the high season, visiting in Winter is a quieter experience.
The river shore is also known for its collection of mini cairns made from river stones. However, be prepared for sandflies, which can be bothersome near the pools.
Glacial Origins and River Scenery
The Makarora River flows from the Southern Alps, carrying cold, mineral-rich meltwater. As it slows in a bend near the confluence with Blue River, suspended particles settle, creating incredibly clear water with a turquoise hue. The pools are deep and still, often glowing blue-green even in cloudy conditions.
The track itself winds for 1.5 km (one way) through mature silver beech/tawhai forest. The path is wide and gravelled, easy for most people, taking around 30 minutes return. Two swing bridges span the Makarora and Blue Rivers, with stunning overhead views of the pools and the Blue River gorge.
Despite its short length, the walk rewards with alpine forest, river views, and native birdlife. Sandflies can be prolific in warmer months, especially near the water, so insect repellent is recommended. They are less of an issue in cooler months, but may still be a nuisance. Always remember, they can't fly as fast as you can walk!
Access to Tramping Routes
Beyond the pools, you can connect to the Blue-Young Link Track and Blue Valley Track. Both tracks lead deep into the park for experienced trampers, although the first hour on the link track is an easy walk south along the Makarora River.
Weatherproof Views
Even in the rain, the car park beside SH6 offers panoramic views down the valley, framed by steep forested slopes and misty peaks. On moody West Coast days, it’s a dramatic contrast to the clarity of the pools below.
