Challenging Tramp to Brewster Hut
Brewster Track, which leads to Brewster Hut, is a demanding day tramp located near Haast Pass in the South Island. This tramp is known for its unrelenting, steep, mostly forested terrain, beginning with a crossing of the unbridged Haast River. The track is ideal for those seeking a rigorous tramping experience amidst stunning natural surroundings, with the payoff of exiting the forest into mountain tussock lands and outstanding views.
Starting Point and River Crossing
The journey begins at the Fantail Falls car park, situated off the Haast Pass section of State Highway 6. From the car park, walk a short distance downstream of the falls to find a large orange trailhead marker on the opposite side of the Haast River. While the river crossing is typically straightforward, it can become more difficult after wet weather, so exercise caution.
The Ascent to Brewster Hut
The track follows the ridge line between Fantail Stream and Pyke Creek, leading towards Mt Armstrong, which stands at 2,174 metres. About two-thirds of the hike is through a scenic beech forest, providing some shelter from the elements.
Once across the river, prepare for a strenuous ascent. The climb to Brewster Hut is approximately 1,000 metres over a distance of just 2.5 km, with the occasional clambering hold onto a tree root required. This track is notably steeper and more rugged than other popular hikes in the region, such as Roy’s Peak or Isthmus Peak. The odd flat section comes as a brief relief; the good news is that persistence will get you to the edge of the forest in under 2 hours.
Mountain Views
At the 1,150 metre mark, you will exit the forest, but with still 300 metres to climb to the hut through the mountain tussock. But from here, the views are exceptional, and only improve and open up as you approach the hut. Overall, it will take about 2.5 to 3 hours to get to the hut.
For those seeking further adventure, an additional 2 km hike across Mt Armstrong's face leads to the Brewster Glacier, offering breathtaking photo opportunities. However, there is no marked track or route; it is much more rugged than it looks from a distance, and should only be attempted by confident, experienced, properly equipped trampers.
Planning Your Trip
Allow 5 to 6 hours for the return trip to the hut, and an overnight hut stay if you plan to visit the glacier. Always check the weather forecast before embarking on this tramp, and make sure you have suitable clothing and gear for sudden weather changes.
