Exploring the Scenic Haast Highway
The Haast Highway, part of State Highway 6, offers a stunning journey through New Zealand's South Island, crossing Haast Pass into South Westland. This route is renowned for its breathtaking scenery, including views of the Hooker Glacier from Pleasant Flat and the Roaring Billy Falls. These natural attractions make it a must-visit for those travelling along the west coast.
Discovering Jackson Bay Okahu
After passing through the hamlet of Haast, a left turn leads to Haast Beach and Jackson Bay Okahu. This 50 km sealed road winds through a picturesque landscape of farmland, mature native trees, and wetlands, ending at the small settlement of Jackson Bay. Along the way, the communities of Okuru, Hannah’s Clearing, and Neil’s Beach provide easy access to beautiful beaches. The Hapuka Estuary Walk, signposted along the route, offers a chance to explore the wetlands.
Exploring the Jackson River Road
Just beyond the one-lane Arawhata River bridge, the road sharply turns right towards Jackson Bay, with a turnoff for Jackson River Road. This 20 km metal road follows the Jackson River and is the southernmost road accessible by vehicle, apart from the Milford Sound access road. After 3 km, visitors can enjoy a short walk to the stunning Lake Ellery.
Journeying North from Haast
Travelling north from Haast on SH 6, the road crosses the Haast River plain via a 737-metre one-lane bridge. Historically, much of these river plains were cleared for farming, except the rugged area from south of the Haast River to Lake Paringa. This section remained untouched until the 1960s when conservation efforts successfully preserved the ancient forest.
Accessing the Ancient Forest
The preserved ancient forest, part of the wider Te Wāhipounamu region, is a natural treasure. Visitors can access this pristine environment at Ship Creek, near Lake Moeraki, and from the northern end of the Haast to Paringa Cattle Track.
