Clutha River Road

Discover the Clutha River Road

The Clutha River Road on the western bank of the Clutha / Mata-au between Tuapeka Mouth and Beaumont is a lesser-known drive that runs close to the water, passing river terraces and fishing spots. Along the route are surprising sections of native beech forest, interspersed with exotic deciduous trees that display striking colours in Autumn. The Clutha River Road contrasts with the higher State Highway 8 on the eastern bank.

The Clutha flows fast and wide, carving terraces from ancient river gravels. These terraces, stacked like steps above the channel, reflect the river's changing flow levels and its glacial past, while anglers can cast into long, deep pools.

A Quiet Scenic Route

This backroad is sealed in most places, with pull-offs and fishing access tracks scattered along its length. A highlight is a grove of native beech trees that stands in sharp contrast to the farmland and exotic plantings along much of the route. The beech canopy feels unexpectedly cool and enclosed, a reminder of what once covered much of the valley.

There are no major facilities along the road, just a handful of farms and paddocks. Its appeal lies in the close river views and slow pace, making it ideal for a half-hour detour or a scenic leg-stretch by the river.

How to Get There

Start from Tuapeka Mouth after taking the reaction ferry, then follow Clutha River Road north for 17 km. It rejoins SH8 near Beaumont. The road is sealed but winding, with little traffic, but it's best taken slowly.

At the end of the drive, consider a break at the Beaumont Hotel, Millers Flat, or continue to the cafes of Roxburgh.
