Explore Beaumont

Set beside a scenic gorge on the Clutha/Mata-au, Beaumont is a small settlement with a rich river history and a freshly restored historic bridge that serves cyclists and walkers. Just a 20-minute drive north of Lawrence on State Highway 8, it’s also a natural rest stop on the Clutha Gold Cycle Trail.

Bridge and River Views

A new two-lane road bridge now carries State Highway 8 traffic, but the former single-lane iron bridge has been restored for pedestrians and cyclists. From its deck, you get broad views over the river’s rocky channel, willow-lined banks, and steep terraces. Below the bridge, it’s also a popular stop for trout and salmon fishing, with easy access to the river banks.

Clutha Gold Trail Connections

Beaumont sits on the Clutha Gold Trail, a 73 km walking and cycling route between Lawrence and Roxburgh. Much of the trail follows the former Roxburgh railway line. From Beaumont, the trail crosses the restored bridge and heads upstream toward Millers Flat. Heading south, the trail climbs through farmland on its way to Lawrence.

Pub and Local History

The Beaumont Hotel, rebuilt in the 1930s, continues a tradition of hospitality that dates back to the gold rush era. Early hotels served miners, ferry travellers, and railway workers. The pub today provides meals, local character, and accommodation for trail users and drivers alike.

Māori History and Naming

Moa-hunter era artefacts have been found around Beaumont, including near the Belle Burn, which was once used as a river crossing for mōkih (rafts). The site of a nohoaka (seasonal camp) known as Te Kohai lay just upstream. The name Beaumont was likely adopted from the nearby stream, possibly by early surveyors; earlier names, such as Dunkeld, were proposed but never gained traction.

How to Get There

Beaumont is on State Highway 8, 27 km north of Lawrence and 13 km south of Millers Flat. From Tuapeka Mouth, you can also arrive via Clutha River Road after crossing on the historic reaction ferry.

Other nearby places to visit include Tapanui and the Roxburgh Dam. You can also discover the 434-meter Big Hill Tunnel on the Clutha Gold Trail, between Beaumont and Lawrence.
