Discover Karekare Falls in Auckland's Waitākere Ranges
Karekare Falls is a beautiful natural attraction located in Karekare, Waitākere Ranges, Auckland. This waterfall is easily accessible and surrounded by green, regrowth forest. The short walk to the falls provides open views from the road, followed by a short forest walk to the base.
Exploring the Waterfalls
To reach the attractive 30 metres high Karekare Falls, walk from the Karekare car park and head east along Lone Kauri Road. Cross the bridge and continue up the road until you spot the falls on your left. The access track will lead you directly to the waterfall. As you make your way down the track, keep an eye out for a smaller waterfall on the right side. The walk takes about five minutes.
Enjoying the Pool
If you're planning to take a dip, remember to bring your togs. The pool at the base of Karekare Falls is an inviting spot for a refreshing swim. The tranquil setting and the sound of cascading water create a peaceful atmosphere, perfect for relaxation. Be aware, it will be busy on fine weekends and summer holidays. The falls will be at their best after a rainstorm.
Getting to Karekare Falls
From Piha Road, just before you reach Piha, take Karekare Road downhill to the car park where Karekare Road becomes Lone Kauri Road. From there, it's a short walk along Lone Kauri Road to reach the falls.
Other things to do around Karekare include a walk around the Watchman to the black sand surf beach, a hike on Comans Track and the Ahu Ahu Track to the Mercer Bay Loop and Piha, and a walk south along the beach and through the dunes to the Pararaha Valley, then the Gibbons and Muir Tracks to Whatipū.
