Discovering Pararaha Valley
Pararaha Valley is a dramatic, steep-sided valley located roughly midway between Whatipu and Karekare. This area has particularly striking, steep-sided volcanic landscapes and is a rewarding destination for those seeking a scenic hike.
The valley can be accessed via the Gibbons and Muir Tracks from Whatipu, leading to a campsite in the heart of the valley. Alternatively, you can reach the valley entrance by walking along the beach, passing lagoons and through the dunes from Karekare. Each route takes approximately 2.5 hours for a round trip, depending on how much time you spend exploring along the way.
Exploring the Valley's Features
The main track through Pararaha Valley has undergone significant upgrades, enhancing the hiking experience. At the valley's entrance, you'll encounter a wetland area, which you can traverse via a boardwalk. Here, you'll also pass the access to the Zion Track on the left (presently closed). Keep an eye out for a waterfall cascading off a distant cliff. As you continue up the valley, a second waterfall may become visible after rainfall, tumbling from a cliff that creates a dogleg in the valley.
An intriguing feature along the way is the extended curved bridge that spans the Pararaha Stream, offering a perfect vantage point for viewing the surrounding scenery. The track then leads into an area of forest regrowth, flanked by cliffs and steep hills, including a prominent conical volcanic core on the left as you walk in.
Stream Exploration and Campsite
From the centrally located campsite, you have easy access to the Pararaha Stream. This provides an opportunity to explore the stream at your own pace, enjoying the natural beauty and tranquillity of the area. If you go far enough, you will discover two more waterfalls.
How to Get There
Karekare is accessed from Piha Road on Karekare Road or Lone Kauri Road. From teh beach car park, walk to the beach, then head south, roughly following the line of the cliffs and lagoons. A formed track eventually appears as you approach Tunnel Point. Whatipū is reached on Whatipu Road. From the main car park, follow the marked track to the west, below the Whatipu Lodge, until you reach the access to the Gibbons Track.
