Te Araroa - Waiwera to Ōrewa

Te Araroa runs the length of the Hibiscus Coast, from Puhoi to Silverdale, then onto Stillwater on the south side of the Whangaparāoa Peninsula. The most interesting part of this section of the hike is from Waiwera to Ōrewa, which takes you below the high cliffs and rocky point between Waiwera and Hatfields Beach, along the beach, then around the point between Hatfields and Ōrewa Beach.

The rocky platforms below the cliffs are only accessible at low tide, and it takes about 2 hours one way. So plan accordingly. Along the way, there are rockpools, fishing spots, and of course, the beaches. The cliffs are multi-hued, and there is the odd small sea cave to check out, some with astonishingly coloured rocks. If you end up in Ōrewa, you can settle in for a well-deserved pitstop.

Either end of this walk can be reached on the Twin Coast Discovery Highway. If you only have a short time, walk from the north end of Ōrewa Beach to Hatfields Beach and back, about 40 minutes.
