North Otago Coast

North Otago Coast: A Lesser Known Gem

The North Otago Coast, located on the Pacific Ocean, is a stunning yet often overlooked destination for travellers. Instead of following State Highway 1 south of Ōamaru, take the scenic route along Beach Road, which leads you to the coast south of Cape Wanbrow. This provides access to beautiful beaches and continues through the charming beach town of Kakanui, eventually reaching Te Hakapureirei Beach via Waianakarua Road.

Coastal Highlights and Scenic Beauty

As you travel along this route, you'll encounter several picturesque spots, including Kaknui Beach, Kakanui, Kakanui Point and Campbells Bay, Ōrore All Day Bay, Bridge Point, and Te Hakapureirei Beach. The road, only 25 km long, is well maintained and provides access to these stunning beaches.

The northern end of the coast is characterised by golden to orange sands, with colourful eroding coastal cliffs that glow warmly in sunlight. Further south, the beaches are framed by ancient limestone cliffs, creating a dramatic and less colourful but equally beautiful landscape. Throughout the drive, rolling green pasture dominates the inland views.

Geological Wonders and Camping Options

The North Otago Coast is home to fascinating geological features. The Points along the coast are remnants of ancient volcanoes that date back over 30 million years. Around Kakanui Point, you can find unusual rock formations, while Bridge Point boasts a natural arch. However, exercise caution near the cliffs above the beaches due to potential hazards.

For those looking to stay overnight, Kakanui has a campground, and freedom camping is signposted in other areas. Oāmaru is the best option for other types of accommodation.

How to Get There

To explore the North Otago Coast, start by heading south from Ōamaru along Beach Road, which will lead you to the coast south of Cape Wanbrow. Continue on this road to reach Kakanui and follow Waianakarua Road to Te Hakapureirei Beach. The route eventually connects with State Highway 1 north of Hampden, just before the Waianakarua River Mouth.

Continuing south takes you along another beautiful coast to Hampden Beach, Moeraki Boulders, Moeraki and Kātiki Point.
