Discover Kātiki Point: A Hidden Gem on the Moeraki Peninsula
Kātiki Point is located at the southern tip of the Moeraki Peninsula on the North Otago Coast. This lesser-known destination offers a unique blend of stunning coastal views, rich natural experiences, and significant Māori history. You can enjoy panoramic views and encounter local wildlife, making it a worthwhile stop for those exploring the area.
Scenic Walk and Wildlife Encounters
The track to Kātiki Point begins at the end of Lighthouse Road, following a ridge towards the point. The surrounding landscape is primarily farmland, interspersed with sections of replanted native shrubs. This setting provides excellent views southward towards Kātiki Beach.
As you approach the point, a fenced slope leads down to small orange sand beaches, separated by rocky platforms and reefs on the eastern side. Here, you can expect to see numerous kekeno (fur seals) lounging about. Hoiho (yellow-eyed penguins) are also present, though less commonly spotted. Continuing to the end of the point, you can cross over to the west side for the return walk. The rocky slope here is steeper, with a cliff edge that the kekeno seem to favour.
Historical Significance of Te Raka-a-hineatua Pā
Kātiki Point is also historically significant as the site of Te Raka-a-hineatua, a major pā. This fortified village was marked by an entrance and protective palisade at the start of the point. It was the best-developed southern pā, featuring terraces and rectangular houses with stone fireplaces.
Built by the renowned chief Taoka in the late 1600s to early 1700s, the pā was constructed following skirmishes with Tāwhaki-te-Raki further north. After its completion, Tāwhaki-te-Raki led a war party from Kaikōura, but Taoka emerged victorious in the ensuing battle. Taoka also established pā at the Ashburton River and near Timaru.
