Exploring Hampden Beach
Hampden is a charming town situated on State Highway 1, just three kilometres north of the famous Moeraki Boulders on the North Otago Coast. This small town is an ideal stop for refreshments between Ōamaru and Palmerston, with a popular café, a fish and chip shop, a hotel restaurant, and historic buildings. Hampden's main attraction is its beach, which is complemented by the nearby Moeraki Boulders Holiday Park. Note that the playground features only concrete replicas of the boulders!
Discovering Hampden Beach
To visit Hampden Beach, turn east from the main highway onto Lincoln Street or Derby Street. These roads lead to the reserve and playground located in front of the beach. The beach is bordered by cliffs to the north and south, creating a picturesque coastal setting.
As the tide goes out, you can enjoy a three-kilometre walk south along the beach to see the actual Moeraki Boulders. Keep an eye out for Hector’s Dolphins, which are sometimes visible in the surf, though sightings are less common in calm conditions.
