Discover the Ancient Kauri of Leigh Scenic Reserve

Leigh Scenic Reserve, located on the North Shore of Auckland, is home to the oldest kauri tree in the area. This remarkable tree is estimated to be over 800 years old, comparable in age to the largest kauri trees found in Cascade Kauri within the Waitākere Ranges. The reserve is a unique opportunity to explore a diverse range of kauri trees.

Exploring the Reserve

Leigh Scenic Reserve is accessed through Lynn Reserve, situated on Lynn Road in the suburb of Bayview, north of Birkenhead. The track follows a path through the grassy Lynn Reserve to reach the entrance of Leigh Scenic Reserve. The reserve track has been significantly upgraded with boardwalks to protect the kauri trees from kauri dieback disease.

Shortly after entering, the track splits into two branches. Both paths feature substantial kauri trees; however, the ancient kauri is located on the more northerly branch. The entire walk takes approximately 30 minutes.

How to Get There

To visit Leigh Scenic Reserve, head to Lynn Road in the suburb of Bayview. Parking is readily available next to Lynn Reserve on the road. From there, follow the path through Lynn Reserve to access the scenic track.

While in the area, consider exploring other nearby parks on the North Shore. Significant pockets of kauri and other native trees can also be found in the Chatswood Reserve, Kauri Glen, Le Roys Bush, and Eskdale Reserve. Or check out Kauri Point Centennial Park, which combines a forest walk with lovely Kendall Beach.
