Exploring Thunder Creek Falls
Thunder Creek Falls, standing at an impressive 98 metres, is one of New Zealand's most accessible tall waterfalls. Located in the scenic Haast Pass region of South Westland in the South Island, it offers visitors a breathtaking view and a chance to experience the natural beauty of the area. The waterfall is particularly captivating during wet conditions when the water flow is at its peak.
Visiting the Falls
The journey to Thunder Creek Falls is straightforward. The car park is located along State Highway 6, just over a kilometre past the Gates of Haast bridge when travelling west. From the car park, it's only a short walk to the Haast River and the viewing platform, where you can enjoy a direct view of the falls.
Best Time to Visit
The falls are most spectacular during wet weather due to the increased water flow. During kow waterflows, you can more safely cross the river to the base of the falls.
How to Get There
To reach Thunder Creek Falls, drive along State Highway 6. After crossing the Gates of Haast bridge heading west, continue for about a kilometre until you see the car park on the side of the road. From there, a short walk will lead you to the viewing platform.
