Exploring the Coastal Bays of Long Bay
Long Bay Regional Park, located on the North Shore of Auckland, offers a scenic coastal walk that takes you from the north end of Long Bay Beach to the smaller, picturesque bays of Granny’s Bay and Pōhutukawa Bay. This walk is best undertaken around low tide, allowing you to explore the rocky platforms that separate these charming bays. A highlight of the walk is the ancient pōhutukawa trees that cling to the cliffs, providing a striking natural backdrop.
Connecting with the North Shore Coastal Walk
At Pōhutukawa Bay, you will find a gap in the cliffs that allows you to join the North Shore Coastal Walk, part of the Te Araroa trail. For those looking to extend their walk, you can continue around the base of the cliffs past Puriri Point. This route leads to the northern end of the walk, situated at the edge of the Okura River mouth.
How to get there
The park is accessible by car, with parking available next to Long Bay Beach. From the car park, head to the north end of Long Bay Beach. Cross the stream and follow the line of the cliffs.
Within the park, you can also check out the Long Bay Nature Trail. To the north of Long Bay, you can explore the Hibiscus Coast, including Shakepsear Regional Park and Wenderholm Regional Park. To the south is the series of beaches, bays, and cliffs on the coastal walk, nearest being Torbay and Browns Bay.
