Exploring Lake Ōpuha: A Tranquil Escape

Lake Ōpuha is a quiet destination located just off State Highway 79, northeast of Fairlie, on the route from Geraldine. Located amongst farmland, the lake has a sense of seclusion and tranquillity.

Recreational Activities and Scenic Views

Ōpuha is a man-made lake, created by a dam to support local agriculture and nestled in a broad valley between the Sherwood and Two Thumb Ranges to the west and the Four Peaks Range to the east.

The lake has a walking track along its southern edge, starting at the dam, which is perfect for leisurely strolls. There is also a boat ramp for those interested in water activities.

The calm waters of Lake Ōpuha often reflect the surrounding hills, mountains, and sky, creating stunning visual displays. The views from near the lake are particularly captivating.

How to Get There

To reach Lake Ōpuha, take Mt Michael Road from State Highway 79, approximately 10 km before reaching Fairlie, coming from Geraldine. After your visit, you can reconnect with State Highway 79 via Monument Road and Seddons Road, which lies between Burkes Pass and Fairlie. The lake is a 13-minute, 10 km drive from Fairlie.

Once you reach Burkes Pass, you are into the side open highlands of the Mackenzie Country, with many more places to visit, including Mackenzie Pass, Lake Tekapo, Mt John and Lake Alexandrina.
