Lake Alexandrina: A Trout Fishing Haven Near Tekapo

Lake Alexandrina, located near Tekapo in the Mackenzie Country of the South Island, is a picturesque lake and conservation reserve renowned for its excellent trout fishing. This serene spot was named after Alexandrina Robinson, whose brothers were business partners with John McGregor, a station owner in the region during the 1800s. McGregor introduced trout to the lake, enhancing its appeal to anglers. Nearby, the smaller Lake McGregor bears his name.

Tranquil Setting and Accommodation

The area around Lake Alexandrina provides a peaceful retreat with a few holiday homes and a camping area. Visitors can enjoy the sense of seclusion, surrounded by mountains and expansive open spaces. The lake's remote setting provides a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

On a clear night, you will benefit from the Dark Sky region and get to experience the Milky Way in all its glory!

How to Get to Lake Alexandrina

To reach Lake Alexandrina, start by taking State Highway 8 west from Tekapo. Turn onto Godley Peaks Road, with Mount John to your right. From Godley Peaks Road, there are two routes to the lake. For Lake Alexandrina South, turn just before the Mount John access road. Alternatively, continue north to reach Lake Alexandrina Road.

Be sure to also drive up the Mount John access road (small road toll) for the lake and mountain views while you are there. If you feel energetic, there is also access by foot from Tekapo. Walking around the reserve in front of Lake Tekapo to the Church of the Good Shepherd is an easier option, or explore the nearby hydro canals by bike.

In Winter, you may be fortunate enough to see a hoar frost, and in early Summer, there will be endless colourful lupins in the region.
