Exploring Mount John in Tekapo

Mount John, located on the south side of Lake Tekapo, is home to the University of Canterbury Observatory. This spot offers stunning 360-degree views of the lake, surrounding golden tussock-clad hills and mountains, snow-capped in Winter, and the MacKenzie Basin. At the summit, visitors can also enjoy a visit to a well-regarded café.

Hiking and Driving Options

Visitors can choose to hike up Mount John from the south end of Lake Tekapo. The hike takes about one hour and involves a 300-metre climb, which is steep in places. For those short on time, driving is an option. There is a modest toll for road access, and opening times can vary. It is advisable to check the schedule before heading up in the afternoon, as the gate is locked at certain times.

How to Get There

To reach the access road for Mount John, drive west on State Highway 8 from Tekapo for a few kilometres. Then, turn right onto Godley Peaks Road. Continue along this road until you see the entrance to Mount John on your right. You will also find gorgeous Lake Alexandrina a bit further down the road.
