Exploring Laird Thomson Track and Whites Beach
Laird Thomson Track, located in North Piha, is a scenic route to the secluded Whites Beach via Te Waha Point. This track provides stunning coastal views and access to a relatively remote, lesser-known beach.
Track Details and Scenic Views
The walk is short yet impressive, ascending 100 metres through coastal forest above the beach to Te Waha Point. From this vantage point, you can enjoy expansive views along the coastline. There are two routes down from the point: an easy path and a more challenging shortcut down the cliff, aided by an attached wire. The shortcut takes about 20 minutes, while the easier path requires around 30 minutes.
Part of a Longer Loop
Laird Thomson Track is also part of a longer loop. You can start near the Piha Surf Club, hike up to Anawhata Road, descend to Te Waha Point and Whites Beach, and then return to North Piha on the Larid Thomson Track. This loop provides a comprehensive experience of the area's natural beauty.
Best Time to Visit
For a memorable experience, aim to be on Te Waha Point at sunset. The setting sun casts a warm glow over the landscape, enhancing the already breathtaking views.
Getting to Laird Thomson Track
From Piha, it is a short drive along Seaview Road, which becomes Marine Parade North, then North Piha Road. Park in the car park at the end of the road and walk through the dunes to teh beach. Follow the edge of the dunes, then the line of the forested cliff to find the track entrance.
Other walks and places around Piha to visit include Kitekite Falls, Maungaroa Track, the Gap and the Blowhole.
