Exploring The Gap at Piha
The Gap at Piha is a striking natural gap between the seaward cliffs of Kaiwhare Point and Taitomo Island, situated about 500 metres beyond the southern end of Piha Beach. The incoming tide funnels surf through The Gap, exploding on the surrounding rocks and creating a large pool behind the rocks. Despite the dramatic waves, the pool is safe for paddling.
Accessing The Gap
You can reach The Gap by walking across the sand around the base of the cliffs south of the main Piha Beach as the tide recedes. Along the walk to The Gap, you can observe the impressive fall of enormous rocks at the northern end of Taitomo Island and check out a natural tunnel in the island located about halfway along the walk. At the southern end of Taitomo Island, a rough track becomes accessible as the tide recedes, offering additional viewpoints for you to enjoy.
When the tide is in, the large pool of water at The Gap is safe for swimming and wading. The pool largely disappears by low tide. At low tide, you can also safely explore the rock pools that surround the entrance to The Gap.
How to get to Piha
To visit The Gap, head to Piha Beach, approximately a 50-minute drive from Downtown Auckland. From the city, take State Highway 16 west, then follow the signs to Piha. Once at Piha Beach, you can access The Gap by walking south along the beach, best as the tide retreats.
Once you have visited The Gap, you can also go looking for the Blowhole by walking into the scrub and pōhutukawa trees south of The Gap. You may be able to walk through the enormous cave at low tide. Other interesting walks around Piha include Kitekite Falls and White Track.
