Lake Brunner is a pretty lake southwest of Reefton, the largest settlement on which is Moana. Moana is a surprisingly large town with a range of accommodations and services. If you have limited time, your best option is to take the main road into the town and drive to the reserve at the end, where the Arnold River exits the lake. A long swingbridge across the river takes you to a pretty lakeside beach and the Rakaitane Loop Walk. The track is worth it, with the unusually shaped kāmahi trees being a feature amongst mature and regrowth rimu and kahikatea.
To get to Lake Brunner from Blackball, head Southwest on Taylorville Blackball Road, then cross the Grey River bridge. Then take Arnold Valley Rd to Moana and Lake Brunner. Along the way, you can also take a short detour to the Arnold River Dam and Walk. From the south, take Lake Brunner Road to Moana.
