Scenic Drive Through Otira Valley
Located in the heart of New Zealand's South Island, the drive along State Highway 73 offers a captivating journey through the Otira River valley. This route is particularly appealing for its stunning views and unique attractions.
One highlight is the Morrison Footbridge, situated about 4 km into the valley. From this bridge, visitors can enjoy panoramic views both up and down the valley. Additionally, the bridge marks the southern end of the Harper Pass section of Te Araroa, a trail that connects back to the Lewis Pass near Lake Sumner.
Discover the Hamlet of Otira
Continuing along SH73, travellers will reach the quaint hamlet of Otira, nestled at the base of the climb to Arthur's Pass. A visit to the Otira Hotel is highly recommended. The hotel is not only adorned with external Lord of the Rings models but also houses an impressive collection of historical artefacts and displays detailing the area's rich history on its interior walls.
Journey to Arthur's Pass
From Otira, the road begins a winding ascent through the gorge towards Arthur's Pass. This section of the drive offers several safe spots to stop and capture the breathtaking scenery.
Best Time to Visit
The drive through the Otira Valley is particularly enchanting in winter, when snow blankets the mountain peaks. Alternatively, mid-January is a splendid time to visit, as the rātā trees along the valley burst into bloom. The vibrant red flowers of the rātā, similar to pōhutukawa, create a striking contrast against the green forest, offering a visual feast.
Getting to Otira Valley
The Otira Valley is located on SH73, north of Arthur's Pass. If you are coming from the West Coast, the journey will take you through the Taramakau River valley before entering the Otira River valley. The Morrison Footbridge is located approximately 4 km into the valley. Continuing along the highway will lead you to the hamlet of Otira, from where the climb to Arthur's Pass begins.
There are several viewpoints and tracks to access as you approach Arthur's Pass, including Candys Bend and Deaths Corner, the Otira Valley Track and Devils Punchbowl Falls.
