Otira Valley Track

Exploring the Otira Valley Track

Located near the top of Arthur's Pass, the Otira Valley Track is a fun walking experience. In Spring and early Summer, the area is adorned with native mountain shrubs and vibrant wildflowers. One highlight is the Mt Cook buttercups, which bloom around December. Arthur's Pass is one of the few places where you can witness these stunning flowers. Additionally, the valley is home to native giant mountain dragonflies, known as kapokapowai, which are as large as small birds.

Seasonal Changes and Natural Beauty

While the Otira Valley Track is a beautiful destination in Spring and Summer, it transforms in Winter. The car park may be covered in snow, and the steep valley sides can become avalanche-prone. However, during the warmer months, the area offers a unique "mountain garden" experience, similar to those found at Lewis Pass and Hooker Valley near Aoraki Mt Cook.

Getting to the Otira Valley Track

To reach the Otira Valley Track, head towards the top of Arthur's Pass on State Highway 73. The car park is signposted between the pass and the Otira Viaduct, providing easy access to the track.

Arthur's Pass has several moderate walking tracks near its high point and around the township. One highlight is Devils Punchbowl Falls, a must-see for visitors. Other highlights include Candys Bend and Deaths Corner and the township of Otira.
