Exploring Kaihoka Lakes in Golden Bay
Kaihoka Lakes are two small, beautiful dune lakes located in the northwest of Golden Bay on the South Island, in the Kaihoka Lakes Scenic Reserve. These lakes are an ideal spot for a peaceful picnic amidst a regenerating native forest. The surrounding landscape of rolling farmland adds to the tranquil atmosphere, making it a perfect escape into nature.
Facilities, Activities and Wildlife
At the first lake, you'll find amenities including a toilet, a picnic table, and a small grassed reserve. If you're looking to explore further, a ten-minute walk through mostly nikau palm forest will lead you to the second lake. It's important to stay on the track, as the surrounding land is private property.
An unusual feature of the reserve is the presence of Powelliphanta snails, large carnivorous snails, about the size of a small hand, which are native to New Zealand and are rare. There are also several species of birds around the lakes, including shags, pūtangitangi (paradise ducks), Canada geese, and grey ducks.
How to Get There
To reach Kaihoka Lakes from Collingwood, take Collingwood Puponga Main Road north, then turn off onto Pakawau Bush Road towards Whanganui Inlet. At the inlet, turn north onto gravel Kaihoka Lakes Road and continue until you reach the lakes. Parking is available near the first lake. If the initial parking area is full, additional space can be found just up the hill above the lake.
From Whanganui Inlet, you can also head southwest on gravel Dry Road to Paturau River on the West Coast. If you want to explore further, you can follow this spectacular remote coastline south to Anatori.
