Located at the northwest end of Golden Bay, Collingwood is a charming coastal town located at the mouth of the Aorere River. A Glimpse into History
Collingwood retains much of its historical charm, with little physical change over the past century. The town has embraced its past, providing informative descriptions of local history. A visit to the colonial-era cemetery is a step back in time, and a sign at the cemetery details an ambitious expansion plan for Collingwood that never materialised. The surrounding bush is slowly reclaiming the site.
Weather and Reflections
During our visit, the weather was less than ideal, with local flooding near the beach. However, the sight of the Mussel Inn courtyard under a foot of water, while still operating, provided a memorable and picturesque reflection at night!
How to get to Collingwood
To reach Collingwood, head towards the northwest end of Golden Bay on State Highway 60, a scenic drive that takes you through the beautiful landscapes of the region.
From Collingwood, it is a short drive up the Aorere Valley to sites such as the Langford Store, Salisbury Falls and Devils Boots, or the head of the Heaphpy Track in Kahurangi National Park. Or head north along the coast to Pūponga, Cape Farewell and Wharariki Beach. For a more remote experience, discover Whanganui Inlet and the Kaihoka Lakes.
