Anatori: A Remote Coastal Retreat

Anatori is a secluded hamlet located at the mouth of the Anatori River on the remote northwest coast of the South Island. This destination offers a unique experience for those seeking a remote freedom campsite that is still accessible by car, with stunning empty beaches and intriguing cliffs.

Coastal Hiking Opportunities

The beach and the Anatori River mouth are easily accessible when you arrive. However, you can continue on the road to reach the Turimawiwi River mouth, further south along the coast, by fording the river. However, river conditions can vary, and the water may be too high for 2WD vehicles to cross.

If you can get to Turimawiwi River, the coastline from there is walkable to Kahurangi Point, a journey that takes approximately three hours each way. At Kahurangi Keepers House, a Department of Conservation (DOC) hut, offers an overnight accommodation option for those wishing to extend their adventure.

Camping and Accessibility

For those planning to camp in Anatori, it is advisable to check current accessibility conditions through Rankers reviews. This will provide up-to-date information on the campsite's status and any potential challenges in reaching the area.
