Waterfalls of Haast Road

South Westland

Don't go chasing waterfalls is, frankly, bad advice in the Haast Pass region. Especially when it rains, take your time driving down State Highway 6, the Haast Road, between the Isthmus and Haast. There are pictures of some of them here, but this is not all. See how many waterfalls you can find and explore.

Some are well-known and signposted, such as Fantail Falls, Gates of Haast and Thunder Creek Falls. Although close to the road, others are hard to spot as you drive by unless you know to expect them. These include waterfalls on Camp Creek and Waterfall Creek. In both cases, you can stop by the bridge over the creek and safely get out for a better view.

Still others require a short hike, such as the various waterfalls on the Bridle Track near the Haast Pass end and the Roaring Billy. But best of all is the short hike into Wilson Creek Canyon. You will enjoy a magical experience of gentle falls surrounded by moss and lichen-covered rocks there.
