West Bay, Lake Rotoiti

West Bay is at scenic corners of Lake Rotoiti, located just west of St Arnaud in Nelson Lakes National Park. Tucked into a quieter part of the lake, the bay is surrounded by regenerating native bush, with stands of kānuka and mānuka. The calm waters here are ideal for kayaking, boating, fishing, or simply taking in the alpine serenity. It’s popular for walkers, swimmers, and anglers in the warmer months, with plenty of space to explore.

The West Bay Campsite is split into two areas: the Jetty campsite at the eastern end of the bay, and the Buller campsite to the southwest, near the lake’s natural outflow into the Buller River. There’s a jetty and boat ramp, making it easy to get out on the water. The Buller River flows westward toward the coast, and this is a popular fishing spot.

Several walking tracks connect from here, including the gentle Brunner Peninsula Nature Trail, which leads along the lakeshore to Kerr Bay or St Arnaud village, the Anglers Walk following the river, and slightly more adventurous, but still short options like the Black Hill and Moraine Walks. For those seeking longer hikes, Mt Robert Road provides access to the Lakeside Track, the Pourangahau / Mt Robert summit walks, and the 80 km Travers–Sabine Circuit, one of the country’s tougher multi-day treks. There is also the short Pourangahau / Mt Robert Viewpoint Track from the car park at the end of the road.

Getting to West Bay is easy. From State Highway 63, turn onto Pourangahau / Mt Robert Road just west of St Arnaud. The campsite is about 3 km from the village, a short drive or an easy 30-minute walk.
