Discover West Bay at Lake Rotoiti
West Bay is a quiet corner of Lake Rotoiti, situated just west of St Arnaud in Nelson Lakes National Park. This peaceful bay is enveloped by regenerating native bush, featuring kānuka and mānuka trees. The calm waters make it perfect for kayaking, boating, and fishing. In the warmer months, the area is popular for walking, swimming, and angling, with ample space to explore and enjoy the alpine serenity.
Camping and Facilities
The West Bay Campsite is divided into two sections: the Jetty campsite at the eastern end and the Buller campsite to the southwest, near where the lake flows into the Buller River. Facilities include a jetty and a boat ramp, providing easy access to the water. The Buller River, flowing westward towards the coast, is a favoured fishing spot.
Walking Tracks and Hiking Opportunities
West Bay serves as a starting point for several walking tracks. The Brunner Peninsula Nature Trail offers a gentle walk along the lakeshore to Kerr Bay or St Arnaud village. The Anglers Walk follows the river, while the Black Hill and Moraine Walks provide slightly more adventurous, yet short, options.
For those interested in longer hikes, Mt Robert Road leads to the Lakeside Track, the Pourangahau / Mt Robert summit walks, and the challenging 80 km Travers–Sabine Circuit. The short Pourangahau / Mt Robert Viewpoint Track also begins from the car park at the end of the road.
How to Get There
Reaching West Bay is straightforward. From State Highway 63, turn onto Pourangahau / Mt Robert Road, located just west of St Arnaud. The campsite is approximately 3 km from the village and is accessible by a short drive or a 30-minute walk.
