The Pourangahau / Mt Robert Viewpoint Track is one of the easiest ways to enjoy some of the best alpine views in Nelson Lakes National Park, without a steep climb. Located at the Mt Robert high car park, this short 100-metre track follows a gentle ridge to a lookout at 879 metres above sea level, offering nearly 360-degree panoramic views. It’s perfect for those who want a taste of the mountains without committing to the hike up Pourangahau / Mt Robert.
From this viewpoint, you’ll have sweeping views over Lake Rotoiti’s West Bay, Brunner Peninsula, and Kerr Bay. To the east is the St Arnaud Range, while directly behind you looms the rugged face and summit of Mt Robert itself. The lookout also gives you a bird’s-eye perspective of the Buller River valley stretching away to the west, and even the winding road that brought you up from St Arnaud. It’s a dramatic landscape that's easily accessible, and there’s even space to sit and enjoy a picnic while taking in the scenery.
The short walk to the viewpoint is mostly open, with several large, splayed beech trees adding some character to the track. The car park itself sits in a lovely clearing, ringed with mature beech trees, and is also the starting point for longer hikes such as Paddy’s Track and the Pinchgut Track to the Pourangahau / Mt Robert summit — a 500-metre climb for those who are keen.
To get there, take Mt Robert Road west from State Highway 63, climbing steadily through native forest until you reach the Mt Robert car park. The drive takes about 15 minutes and offers great views along the way. Be aware that the gravel road can be quite rough and rutted.
