Discover Te Matua Ngahere
Te Matua Ngahere, known as the Father of the Forest, is the second-tallest kauri tree in New Zealand, located in the Waipoua Forest on Northland's Kauri Coast. This ancient tree, estimated to be over 2,000 years old, is not only a remarkable natural wonder but also a significant historical landmark, "discovered" by Nicholas Yakas in 1928 during the construction of what is now State Highway 12.
A Walk Through the Forest
Reaching Te Matua Ngahere involves an easy 20-minute walk along a gravelled path and boardwalks. This route takes you through a stunning section of large kauri trees, arguably the best kauri walk in New Zealand, culminating at a viewing platform in front of the majestic Te Matua Ngahere. While it may not match the height of Tāne Mahuta, the tallest kauri, Te Matua Ngahere is notably wider, earning it the nickname "the wall."
