Discover Waimamaku Beach on the Kauri Coast

Waimamaku Beach, also known as Kaikai Beach, is a hidden gem on the Kauri Coast of the North Island. Nestled between Waipoua Forest and the Hokianga, this stunning surf beach on the Tasman Sea offers a unique and tranquil escape. Its secluded location and natural beauty make it a worthwhile departure from the beaten track.

Enjoy the Lagoon and Coastal Exploration

The lagoon beside Waimamaku Beach, fed by the Waimamaku River, is the perfect spot to relax. With its sandy shores and sufficient depth, it provides an ideal setting for a refreshing swim. You can also enjoy exploring the surrounding dunes and coastline, with scenic views and an empty beach.

Hiking the Waimamaku Coastal Track

For those seeking adventure, the Waimamaku Coastal Track offers a more challenging experience. This historic route, once the primary route before the highway, stretches 10 km from Hokianga Harbour to the beach. The track follows the rugged coastline and takes approximately four hours to complete. It is advisable to arrange transportation at both ends of the track.

How to Get to Waimamaku Beach

To reach Waimamaku Beach, take Waimamaku Beach Road from State Highway 12. Follow this metal road to its end. As the tide recedes, you can walk for about 10 minutes along the side of the lagoon and river mouth to access the beach.

To the south, you can explore Waiotemarama Falls, Waipoua Forest and Trounson Kauri Park, home to ancient kauri trees. To the north, it is a short drive to Arai-te-Uru / South Head and the more sedate, yet still beautiful, beaches at Ōmāpere and Opononi in the Hokianga Harbour.
