Discovering Shelly Bay in Beachlands
Shelly Bay, located in Beachlands, Auckland, is a hidden gem on the Pōhutukawa Coast. This secluded spot is ideal for those seeking a peaceful retreat surrounded by nature. The sandy beach is accessible from Shelly Bay Reserve, situated at the corner of Second Avenue and Pōhutukawa Road. A small sign marks the entrance, where you will find several parking spaces. From there, a short walk leads you to a series of steps descending the cliff to a stunning beach enveloped by pōhutukawa trees.
A Scenic and Tranquil Beach
From the reserve, the track descends the cliff side, through pōhutukawa trees and native shrubs, to the beach. Stretching approximately 300 metres, Shelly Bay is a safe spot for swimming, sheltered within the Tamaki Strait. The sand here has a unique gold and pink hue, while the cliffs display striking shades of yellow and orange. Large pōhutukawa trees overhang from the cliffs around the beach, including an unusual sun-bleached tree that clings to the cliffside. It is a perfect spot for a picnic!
At the western end, you will find the remnants of an old, graffiti-covered boat shed. Despite the presence of houses atop the cliff, they are barely noticeable, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the surroundings.
