Discover Ngākuta Bay in Grove Arm

Set deep within the Grove Arm of Queen Charlotte Sound, Ngākuta Bay is a small settlement where bush-clad hills meet calm, sheltered waters. Just 15 minutes from Picton along Queen Charlotte Drive, it is a tranquil place for safe swimming, kayaking, and connecting with the Link Pathway walking and cycling track. In the right light, the water takes on an extraordinary emerald colour, reflecting the surrounding steep forested hills. The name Ngākuta comes from the tall wetland kuta (sedges) that once grew here.

There are no shops and only limited parking, so come prepared. A small grassy reserve at the water’s edge makes a pleasant picnic spot, and the bay’s residential character contributes to its quiet atmosphere.

Walking and Lookouts

Ngākuta Bay is one of the access points to the Link Pathway. A ridge climb leads to sweeping views across Grove Arm, before continuing towards Momorangi Bay or dropping down a side track to Governors Bay, a hidden beach framed by native forest. These short and moderate walks combine scenery with regular birdlife.

Getting There

Ngākuta Bay is 11 kilometres from Picton along Queen Charlotte Drive or 28 minutes from Havelock.

Further west on Queen Charlotte Drive, you will also discover Momorangi Bay and Aussie Bay, both of which have campsites. On the far side of Grove Arm is Anakiwa at the west end of the Queen Charlotte Track.
