Governors Bay, a Gem in Grove Arm
Governors Bay is a secluded cove between Ngākuta and Momorangi Bays in Grove Arm, Queen Charlotte Sound, reached only on foot. From a signposted layby on Queen Charlotte Drive, a 200-metre track descends 60 metres through coastal bush to a sandy beach washed by clear water turned green by the surrounding forest reflections. Birds sing overhead and dappled light filters through the trees, making the approach part of the experience. There are no facilities, but that is part of its appeal. The beach is well-suited for a picnic, with a grassy reserve behind the beach, or a quiet swim. There is a real sense of seclusion away from the road.
Connection to the Link Pathway
The bay also connects with the ridge section of the Link Pathway, which runs between Ngākuta and Momorangi Bays. Walkers can combine the ridge and the beach for a short loop, with lookouts providing wide views across Grove Arm.
Getting There
Governors Bay is 9 kilometres from Picton, signposted from Queen Charlotte Drive. It can also be reached as a side trip from the Link Pathway.
