Exploring the Motatapu River Track

Located near Wānaka, the Motatapu River Track is a scenic 6 km walk through the stunning landscapes of the Matukituki Valley. This mostly flat trail is perfect for those looking to enjoy the area's natural beauty, with the Motatapu River running below the Harris Mountains providing a picturesque backdrop.

Trail Details and Features

The track runs from the end of Motatapu Road, near the Motutapu Gorge, to Mt Aspiring Road. Along the way, you'll follow the river, which is flanked by the impressive Harris Mountains. The trail is generally flat, making it accessible for most walkers. Be aware that in one section, the track is prone to erosion by the river. A warning sign at the start of the track alerts you to this, and it is still manageable.

Timing your walk to coincide with sunset can enhance your experience, as the golden light conditions are stunning.

Parking and Access

On Mt Aspiring Road, parking is available on the opposite side of the bridge by the river. Alternatively, you can turn into the access road opposite the bridge and drive past the quarry to reach a reserve above the river. This area features a rock face popular with climbers and another small gorge.

Important Considerations

It's important not to confuse the Motatapu River Track with the nearby Motatapu Track. The latter is a challenging tramping route after the first hour or so and a multi-day section of Te Araroa, requiring a different level of preparation and experience.

Getting to the Motatapu River Track

To reach the Motatapu River Track from Wānaka, take Mt Aspiring Road northwest. The trailhead is located just after the access to Diamond Lake and immediately before the bridge over the Motatapu River. Alternatively, head south on Motatapu Road from Glendhu Bay and park before the bridge at the end of the public road.

Nearby, you can also check out the Treble Cone skifield road for the views, hike up Rocky Mountain, walk or bike the Glendhu Bay Track, visit West Wānaka and the Homestead Bay Track, and hike up the Roys Peak Track.
