Homestead Bay Track

Discover Homestead Bay to Minaret Burn

Located on the secluded western shore of Lake Wānaka, the Homestead Bay Track and Minaret Burn Track (shared with cyclists) are a peaceful escape from the region's busier trails. Just a 15-minute drive from Wānaka township, these tracks meander along the lake's edge through regenerating native forest, farmland, and high-country terraces. With expansive views of Lake Wānaka and the Southern Alps, these trails provide a rewarding day walk or an overnight tramp, perfect for those seeking solitude.

Lakeside Views and Rolling Terrain

The track begins at Homestead Bay in West Wānaka and stretches approximately 7 km along the lake's edge to Colquhouns Beach, a pebbled cove ideal for swimming or picnicking.

On the way, the track crosses several small streams and offers panoramic views of Lake Wānaka, The Peninsula, and the distinctive shape of Mou Tapu. Native kānuka, mānuka, and pockets of beech forest provide welcome shade along the way. At Colquhouns Beach, you can also enjoy a stunning view of Mou Waho. The round trip to the beach takes about 4 to 5 hours.

Further Into the Backcountry

Beyond Colquhouns Beach, the trail transitions into the Minaret Burn Track, an advanced-grade route that ventures into high-country terrain. It crosses the Rumbling Burn, which can become impassable during snowmelt. This section leads into the Minaret Burn Mouth Conservation Area, featuring a picturesque lakeside beach at the stream's mouth.

The track then ascends steeply from 400 to 700 metres, following a terrace high above the lake to Minaret Burn. There, descend to the lake and cross the stream to find another inviting beach and a grassy area suitable for camping. The return journey to Minaret Burn is approximately 45 km and requires at least two days, including an overnight stay, if hiking. For cyclists, the route is rated up to grade 5, and it's important to note that this is a remote backcountry trail.

Camping and Track Advice

Freedom camping is allowed in designated areas. Walkers and cyclists should be well prepared, as river crossings can be hazardous after rain or snowmelt, and weather conditions can change quickly. The track crosses private land, so gates must be left as found, and dogs are not permitted.

How to Get There

To reach the Homestead Bay car park from Wānaka township, take Mount Aspiring Road and turn right onto West Wānaka Road. Follow this road to its end. The final section is unsealed but suitable for most vehicles. The drive takes 23 minutes and is 21 km.

Nearby attractions include the Motatapu River Track, Diamond Lake, Rocky Mountain, Glendhu Bay, and the Glendhu Bay Track.
