Mangamate Campsite: A Riverside Retreat
Mangamate is a basic yet very scenic campsite managed by Ngāti Whare, located near Minginui and Whirinaki Te Pua-a-Tāne. The campsite is nestled among a blend of exotic and native trees alongside the Whirinaki River. A notable feature is the 6-metre waterfall at the eastern end, where the Otuwairua Stream cascades into the river. You can safely enjoy soaking in the river and below the waterfall.
Campsite Features and Activities
The campsite has a substantial grassy area at the ned of the access road. You can enjoy trout fishing, swimming and kayaking in the river. Facilities include a toilet and shelter. No fires are permitted, and the campsite is basic, which is reflected in its pricing. You also need to remove all your rubbish when you leave.

How to Get There
To visit Mangamate, drive along Minginui Road from Te Whaiti Road, which connects with State Highway 38 at Murupara. Look for the large sign marking the access road to the campsite. A gate is located partway down this road, and you can access the campsite when the gate is open.
While there, you can take various short walks around Whirinaki Forest, including the stunning main entrance to the forest on River Road, the spectacular Te Whaiti Nui a Toi Canyon and the Wiremu Merito Reserve.
