Discovering Lake Hāwea Dam

Lake Hāwea Dam is located at the southwestern end of Lake Hāwea in the South Island. This dam was constructed to elevate the lake's water level, supporting various hydroelectric schemes on the Clutha River. The Clutha River originates from Lake Wānaka and merges with the Hāwea River further south. The dam not only plays a crucial role in energy production but also offers picturesque views, making it a worthwhile stop for visitors.

Exploring the Area

As you drive over the dam while turning from State Highway 6 into the Lake Hāwea township, you'll notice a small reserve on the left. This area provides ample parking at the back, making it convenient for visitors. For those seeking a better view of the lake, steps over the fence lead to a vantage point. From there, you can enjoy a modest scramble down the uniquely coloured rocks to reach the lake's edge.

The local campground is situated on the northwest side of the dam, just off State Highway 6.

Ideal Spot for Relaxation

Lake Hāwea Dam is an excellent location for a picnic or fishing, especially on a calm day when the lake's surface reflects the surrounding landscape. The tranquil environment and stunning views make it a perfect spot for relaxation and reflection.

How to Get There

To reach Lake Hāwea Dam, travel along State Highway 6 and turn into the Lake Hāwea township. As you cross the dam, you'll find the small reserve on your left, where parking is available.

Nearby options include easy sections of Te Araroa, Lake Hāwea Track and the Hāwea River Track, which come around the south end of the lake, then follow the Hāwea River south to Wānaka. These sections are also suitable for biking.
