Lake Gunn Nature Walk

Exploring Lake Gunn Nature Walk

Located beside Cascade Creek Campsite at the north end of Eglinton Valley on the Te Anau Milford Highway, the Lake Gunn Nature Walk is an easy introduction to Fiordland’s rainforests. This easy 30-minute loop walk takes you through a mature beech forest with rainforest characteristics, leading to Cascade Creek and the edge of Lake Gunn.

Walking the Track

Lake Gunn Nature Walk is a short, easy loop that provides a lovely experience in the heart of an ancient red beech rainforest. As you stroll through the mature beech trees, you'll notice the intense, green undergrowth of ferns, moss and lichen and the tranquil sounds of the creek. The path is well-maintained and suitable for all fitness levels, making it a perfect stop to appreciate the unique flora and fauna of the area.

How to Get There

To access the Lake Gunn Nature Walk from Te Anau, take State Highway 94 north for 75 km, a 1-hour drive. Look for the car park located almost immediately just before you reach Lake Gunn. From here, you can easily join the loop trail. Alternatively, you can drive beyond the car park through the campground, staying on the northside access road, and park near the bridge over the creek. Although there is no marked track entrance by the beech trees, the path is easy to locate near the creek.

From there, you can continue on to Milford Sound and explore the Lower Hollyford Road. Nearby walks and hikes include the Marion Creek Waterfalls, Lake Marian, Key Summit on the Routeburn, Humboldt Falls and the Christie Falls.
