Discover Grandview Mountain Track
Located southeast of Lake Hāwea, the Grandview Mountain Track is a rewarding hike with stunning views of the lake, Wānaka, and the surrounding mountains. Unlike the more popular Roys Peak Track and Isthmus Peak Track, Grandview Mountain provides a quieter alternative, allowing you to enjoy the scenery without the crowds.
Hiking the Track
The track climbs steadily through farmland and tussock-covered slopes, initially following Grandview Stream, including some easy crossings. After 2.5 km, the track climbs up the steep side of the stream's gully, surrounded by golden mountain tussocks. In summer, expect to see the mountainsides dotted with wildflowers. The track then leaves the gully and rises to a fabulous west-facing viewpoint at 1,130 metres, a climb of 700 metres from the car park. The view takes in Lake Hāwea, Wānaka and the Harris Mountains. You may even spot Mt Aspiring in the far distance.
It takes about 2.5 hours to reach this point, and you can continue for an additional hour to reach the top of Grandview Mountain at 1,398 metres. From there, you can also walk east to State Highway 6 and the Lindis River in the Lindis Valley, or north to connect with Te Araroa.
The trail is well-formed but exposed, making it best tackled in clear weather. Suitable for experienced hikers, it’s perfect for those seeking solitude and dramatic scenery.
How to Get There
To access the Grandview Mountain Track, drive through Hāwea and follow the Cemetery Road east to the gravel Gray Road. Continue on Gray Road, then turn left onto Hawea Back Road, and shortly after turn right onto Nook Road where you will find the car park.
Other walking options include a steep climb up Te Araroa from Timaru Creek Road towards the Pakituhi Hut, the Lake Hāwea Track and the Hawea River Walk. Another more challenging hike is the Sayer Burn Track from Kidds Bush Reserve.
