Exploring the North Shore Coastal Walk
The North Shore Coastal Walk, part of Te Araroa, is a rugged and scenic journey from Fossil Point to Thorne Bay. This section of the track is known for winds around the rocky coastline of the North Shore of Auckland opposite Rangitoto Island. The path runs closely between the high water mark and the private properties lining the coast, providing a unique perspective of the area.
Geological Wonders and Scenic Views
As you traverse this coastal walk, you may encounter fascinating geological features, including evidence of the Pupuke eruption, which buried an ancient kauri forest. The walk starts with the fossilised kauri stumps that can be seen at low tide at Fossil Point.
Another notable highlight is a larger rocky outcrop near Thorne Bay, which forms part of the Takapuna Reef. At low tide, the numerous large rock pools become visible, offering an intriguing opportunity for exploration and discovery. Thorne Bay itself is a compact but exceptionally pretty beach. The walkway is the only means of public access.
How to Get There
To begin the North Shore Coastal Walk from Fossil Point, head to the north end of Takapuna Beach. Public transport or a car from Downtown Auckland are options. If driving, take the Takapuna off-ramp from the Northern Motorway, then head east on Esmonde Road to a left turn into Lake Road. Follow Lake Road towards its end, then look for parking on The Stand or The Pomenade, near the beach.
The next section of the walk is from Thorne Bay to Milford Beach, heading north, or from Takapuna Beach to St Leonards Beach, heading south.
