North Shore Coastal Walk: Thorne Bay to Milford Beach
Located on the North Shore of Auckland, the section of the North Shore Coastal Walk from Thorne Bay to Milford Beach is a well-formed path that provides a glimpse into both natural and historical features. This section of the walk is mostly sealed, making it more accessible than the stretch from Fossil Point to Thorne Bay, and is easy to navigate, despite the rocky coast.
Historical Features Along the Walk
An aspect of this section of the walk is the evidence of historical encroachment by adjacent private properties. You'll encounter remnants of stone walls and even the remains of a swimming pool that was once walled off. This pool would have filled with water at high tide, showcasing the creative, albeit controversial, attempts to extend private land into the coastal area.
Scenic Highlights and Viewpoints
The walk includes a section that follows a covered water pipe leading to a wastewater pumping station at Black Rock. This larger rock outcrop provides an excellent viewpoint, with panoramic views of the surrounding coastline. Beyond Black Rock, the track continues around another rocky point, eventually leading you to the sandy expanse of Milford Beach.
How to Get There
Thorne Bay is only accessible on the North Shore Coastal Walk. To do the section from Milford Beach takes around 10 minutes each way. Take your togs and a picnic. Walking to Fossil Point and Takapuna Beach takes another 10 minutes.
