Circle Loop Track, Pelorus Bridge

A Riverside and Forest Loop

The Circle Loop Track offers a varied circuit in Pelorus Bridge Scenic Reserve, combining river views with a climb through native forest. It is a longer alternative to the Tawa Walk and Tōtara Walk, and provides an excellent sense of the Pelorus / Te Hoiere River and surrounding forest. The route also forms part of Te Araroa.

The Circle Loop Track is about 3 kilometres long and takes 1 hour to complete. The grade is moderate, with some mildly steeper sections and rough surfaces in places.

Along the River and Into the Trees

From the main car park, cross the highway and then the path on the north side of Pelorus Bridge, pausing for he stunning view of the river. The start of the track is clearly signposted on the far side of the bridge. From there, the track sits near a cliff edge high above the riverbank, with several vantage points over pools and rapids. Take care with small children.

The Pelorus River narrows dramatically here between the cliffs and rock formations, which reveal the many millennia of water's sculpting effects on the rock. The track then crosses the Rai River on a high swingbridge as it enters the Pelorus River, then climbs into the forest. From here, it forms a loop, passing through mature stands of rimu, kahikatea, and beech. Birdsong is common, and on a calm day, the river’s echo is clearly discernible.

Getting There

Pelorus Bridge Scenic Reserve is located on State Highway 6, about 18 kilometres west of Havelock. From Havelock, follow SH 6 toward Nelson and turn into the reserve before the bridge. Parking is available beside the café and visitor facilities.

You can combine the Circle Loop Track with the Tōtara Walk, or with the Tawa Walk and Elvy Falls Track on the south side of he highway, starting from the main car park. To the west on the highway, there is also Canvastown and the historic Wakamarina Valley gold mining country.
