When it rains, take your time driving down the section of State Highway 6 from the isthmus between Lake Hāwea and Lake Wānaka and Haast. There are numerous waterfalls on State Highway 6, which can be seen as you drive by. If you spot them, there is generally a safe place to stop nearby to have a closer look.
Some are fed by creeks, bridged by the road, and are reasonably persistent. Others will quickly disappear when the rain stops.
If the light is right, you can get some excellent stormy shots across Lake Wanaka and looking north up the Makarora Valley.
