Getting Around

Visiting and getting around a country for the first time can be a daunting experience, and as a new arrival, there are probably a few things you should know. We’ve put together some suggestions and tips that you might find helpful to navigate New Zealand.

Public Transport

Most travellers to NZ hire or buy a car and take a road trip around the country from Auckland. However, there are other ways to get around. All the major cities have public transport, and there are inter-city buses and some train services.

Accommodation

New Zealand offers travellers everything from luxury accommodation to the most basic campsites. We encourage you to do your own research as there are many independent providers all over the motu, but here are a few links to get you going.

Campervan and Car Hire

Many travellers choose to hire a car or camper for their journey. For travellers coming for a longer stay, buying a campervan is a popular option.

Useful Resources

With so much variety across the islands, a huge amount of information is available on exploration opportunities via the Department of Conversation, Regional Tourism Offices, and more.

Safety

There are many ways in which Aotearoa, New Zealand, is very safe. We have no large predators, few poisonous insects, and low crime rates. But there are always some risks associated with travel and, of course, ways to keep yourself safe.
