Otira Valley Track

The car park for the Otira Valley Track is near the top of Arthurs Pass. In winter, it may be covered in snow and with steep valley sides, it can be avalanche-prone.

But in spring and early summer, it is full of native mountain shrubs and wildflowers. This includes Mt Cook lilies up to December, with Arthurs Pass being one of the few places you can see them. You will also find native giant mountain dragonflies (kapokapowai). It is not the largest in the world, but it is still the size of a small bird.

Along with Lewis Pass and Hooker Valley near Aoraki Mt Cook, this is one of the easiest access points for a true “mountain garden” experience.

Several other moderate walk options are available near the Arthurs Pass high point and down to and around the township. Devils Punchbowl Falls are a particular highlight.
